Things to Do with the Kids

So you’ve decided to holiday at home in Ireland this year?

You’ve made a great choice but now the trick is finding things to keep the kids occupied.

I’ve recently come across a fantastic website that lists activities for kids: Fundays.ie has a host of things to keep the little and no so little ones occupied.

You’ve got all the usual favourites like Fota Wildlife Park, Blarney Castle, Trabolgan and The West Cork Model Railway Village but there are dozens of places that I didn’t even know about!

Here’s a few of my highlights:

Liscarroll Donkey Sanctuary

Liscarroll Donkey Sanctuary

The Donkey Sanctuary has taken in about 2400 donkeys rescued from all parts of Ireland. Many have been abandoned or put in a field and given little or no attention after having worked for their owners for years, hauling peat or pulling a cart.

There is a strong feeling at the Donkey Sanctuary that supporters have the right to see how their money is spent on caring for the large donkey family.

Facilities include a visitor information centre with tea/coffee machine, picnic area as well as disabled access and toilet. Tours can be arranged with advance notice.

“Everything good about Ireland can be found in County Cork” – Lonely Planet 2012

Visit Cork's world famous english marketIf you only have a week to visit Ireland this year, then you could do a lot worse than base yourself in Cork city.

According to The Lonely Planet Guide for 2012:  “Everything good about Ireland can be found in County Cork” .

It might seem a little smug, but we have to agree…

Cork has that perfect mix of a vibrant, walking friendly  city with great atmospheric pubs; the world-famous English Market; great ping; interesting, winding laneways; mouthwatering restaurants and delis;  theatres; festivals and most importantly – friendly natives!

West Cork will take your breath awayHead out into the surrounding countryside and as well as the well known Cobh (marking 100 years since the Titanic called in 2012) and Blarney Castle; you have beautiful, brightly painted villages and incredible scenery on the Mizen Head and Beara peninsula to rival and even outshine anything the Ring of Kerry has to offer. Kinsale, with all its wonderful history and yummy seafood is only 30 minutes away. Midleton, only 15 kms from the city is the home of Jameson Irish Whiskey.

Phew! There’s a lot to see, that’s for sure!

Don’t just take my word for it; here’s a list of some accolades for Cork in the press:

  • Cork – “one of the 10 European cites you must visit “- Yahoo Travel
  • Cork – “Top 10 city worldwide” – Lonely Planet
  • Cork -European Capital of Culture 2005 – Cork2005.ie
  • Cork – “One of Ireland’s liveliest cities” – The Guardian
  • Cork’s English Market – “One of  the top 10 Food Markets in Europe” – Observer Food Magazine

100th Anniversary of The Titanic

logo for www.titanic100.ie“2012 marks the 100th anniversary of the Titanic’s maiden voyage. Cobh, then Queenstown, was the Titanic’s last port of call. 123 passengers boarded the magnificent vessel in a bid to journey to the new world. For the last century the world has been intrigued with the story of the largest passenger liner at the
time and the vessel that many thought was unsinkable.

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Titanic’s journey and to remember and pay tribute to all who have been involved with her, Cobh in County Cork, Ireland, will play host to a memorable series of events. This event series – Titanic 100 Cobh 2012, will include many and varied events and will appeal to a wide audience.” (via titanic100.ie)

For those of you not familiar with Cork; Cobh is only 20 mins away from Cork by train and Sheila’s Hostel is only a 5 minute walk from the train station!
